there are two different test methods, which can be utilised to determine the toxic fumes
produced from materials to be placed on passenger carrying trains in the UK.
The two different methods are as follows:
· BS 6853 Annex B.1 – Mass based test method (utilising the methodology
given in NF X 70-100)
· BS 6853 Annex B.2 – Area based test method (utilising the methodology
given in prEN 2824, 2825 and 2826 and the heating arrangement detailed in BS
ISO 5659-2)
BS 6853 Annex B.1 is utilised for Minor Use Materials (Tables 7 and 8 of BS 6853:
1999), Textiles (Table 11 of BS 6853: 1999) and Cables (Tables 13 and 14of BS 6853:
1999).
BS 6853 Annex B.2 is utilised for Surface Materials (Tables 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6), Seat
Trim Materials and Seat Shell Materials (Tables 9 and 10) and Mattresses (Table
12).
In the case of both of these tests, the gases which are analysed are as follows:
Carbon monoxide (CO)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Hydrogen Bromide (HBr)
Hydrogen Chloride (HCl)
Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN)
Hydrogen Fluoride (HF)
Nitrous Oxides (NOx)
Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
