鋁或鋼材料這類非基底可以用化學(xué)鍍鎳技術(shù)防護(hù),并可避免用難以加工的個(gè)銹鋼來提高它們的表面性質(zhì)。比較軟的、不耐磨的基底可以用化學(xué)鍍鎳賦予堅(jiān)硬耐磨的表面。在許多情況下,用化學(xué)鍍鎳代替鍍硬鉻有許多優(yōu)點(diǎn)。特別對(duì)內(nèi)部鍍層和鍍復(fù)雜形狀的零件,以及硬鉻層需要鍍后機(jī)械加工的情況。還有Ni-Fe-p(鎳—鐵—磷)、Ni-Co-p(鎳—鈷—磷)、Ni-Mo-p(鎳—鉬—磷)等鍍層在電腦硬碟及磁聲記錄系統(tǒng)中及感測(cè)器薄膜電子方面得到廣泛的應(yīng)用。一些基底使用化學(xué)鍍鎳可使之容易釬焊或改善它們的表面性質(zhì)。
